ST. GEORGE - Janice Rene Hill, great lady of our heart and dear friend of many, passed away quietly the morning of April 9, 2009 at the age of seventy-four. A "transplant" from Pasadena, California to St. George, Utah in 1993, Janice came full circle to return to the site of her LDS Temple marriage in St. George, Utah in 1954. The beckoning warmth of friends, climate, and culture unfolded around her, and she soon became an active patron of the arts and a devoted church worker in the LDS Relief Society.
She was born in Oakland, California, November 23, 1934 to Stanley Maurius Heeder and Elva L. Loring. Growing up as a native in the Golden State, she was active in many school programs and enjoyed performing in several roles in popular musicals, both in high school and in college. After three years of courtship she married her California husband in the St. George LDS Temple because then it was the designated Southern California Area Temple. She spent fifty-five years with him, raising a wonderful daughter and looking over the rearing of her three grandsons. During that time she also served as Primary President and Relief Society President in the Pasadena Ward of the LDS Church in California.
While living in Pasadena she was Vice President and President of the Music Arts Club. After moving to St. George, she filled those two similar offices here in the Southwest Guild, a support organization for the Southwest Symphony. She was also an enthusiastic volunteer for the St. George Chamber of Commerce for several years. She worked for eight years as Assistant to the Dean of Faculty at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California and as a legal secretary for Elder Doug Callister of Callister and Callister in Glendale, California.
Janice loved to travel, and during the last forty years of her life crisscrossed the countries of Europe from west to east. She knew the capitals of Europe about as well as she knew many of the cities in her homeland. She spoke most fondly of trips to Armenia, Israel, Russia, and China with her husband. She also served a mission with him for the LDS Church in the Czech Republic from 1991 to 1993. She was a charter member of the Heritage Choir and sang with that organization for ten years. She enjoyed reading the Standard Works as well as selected books written by the General Authorities. She especially liked biographies and read daily until she passed away.
